ANTI-GRAFFITI PROGRAM

Up to the year 2000, graffiti did not exist in Cabo San Lucas B.C.S, it was not identified as a social problem, nor of the authorities or the local community, no one knew or understood the terms of graffiti in all of its expressions, modalities and reach, the streets would grow old with the color in which they were originally painted, as well as bridges, schools, parks, historical monuments, tourist zones and other pubic and private spaces.

It was until the year 2004 and to this date, that Pueblo Bonito Group, through the Letty Coppel Foundation, understood the problem and began the Program and Campaign to erase graffiti in the tourist zone, making a contributor brigade named the anti-graffiti brigade, which has erased more than 2,000 social expressions from youngsters such as: signatures, nameplates, slogans, lines, shapes, numbers, symbols, images, messages, etc.

Graffiti is an expression and reflection of the tourist destination community of Los Cabos, with a diversity of social/family problems, where youngsters usually tend to transmit their feelings on walls, fences, water tanks, buildings, bridges, road signs, etc; if the painting is very difficult, they tend to be best recognized among them, that is, the greater the risk the greater the success, which allows them to feel good and be praised. The universe of the painters may be divided in to: sporadic incidental, constant and permanent obsession with an increase to criminal aspects.

Graffiti does not have cultural grounds, nor any productive social idea or message, nor a good expression; it is not considered as an interesting mural, nor a work of art, but however, as a projection that de-merits, discredits, dirties and creates a negative visual image of vandalism for all the citizens and tourists that visit this internationally recognized tourist destination.

Pueblo Bonito Group, through the Letty Coppel Foundation, shall continue to unite and join together with their goodwill to these integrated efforts, to impulse the methods and planned schemes that contribute with the social wellbeing of the community of Los Cabos.
